Is Paintless Dent Repair Worth It — Glass Reflection Dent Repair

If you’re asking whether paintless dent repair (PDR) is worth it, the short answer is yes — for the right kind of dent. The longer answer is more interesting and probably saves you money.

It’s worth it when:

  • The paint is intact. No chips, no cracks. PDR works by re-shaping metal from behind; if the paint is broken, it stays broken.
  • You care about resale value. Repainted panels show up on Carfax and reduce trade-in value. PDR leaves the factory paint untouched.
  • You don’t want to lose your car for a week. Body shops keep the car 4-7 days. PDR is done in your driveway in 30 minutes to 2 hours.
  • You’d rather spend $150 than $850. Same outcome on a typical door ding. The price gap is real.
  • It’s a lease return or trade-in. Lease inspectors and dealers will dock you for paintwork. They don’t dock you for a panel that’s still original.

It’s not worth it when:

  • The metal is torn or punctured. Needs a body shop.
  • The paint is cracked or missing. You’d still need paint repair after PDR, so do both in one shop visit.
  • The dent is on a structural area that’s been compromised in an accident.

The math that makes people say yes

A typical body shop dent repair: $850 – $1,400, 5 days in the shop, factory paint replaced with shop paint.

The same dent with PDR: $125 – $250, 45 minutes in your driveway, factory paint preserved.

If your insurance is paying, this still matters — PDR almost always keeps the claim under your collision deductible, which means you might pay nothing out of pocket. More on PDR insurance coverage in California.

“What if I get the wrong tech?”

Fair concern. A bad PDR tech can stretch the metal, leave hammer marks, or quit halfway. Here’s how to vet:

  1. Ask how many years they’ve done only PDR (not “body work and PDR”).
  2. Ask if they’re aluminum-certified for Teslas, F-150s, Rivians.
  3. Ask about the warranty — anything less than lifetime workmanship is a red flag.
  4. Read recent Google reviews specifically, not just star count.
