Paintless dent repair is remarkably effective — but it’s not magic. Roughly 85 to 90% of dents can be fixed with PDR. Knowing which category your dent falls into saves you time and sets the right expectations. Here’s a clear guide.

Dents PDR Fixes Well

  • Door dings — the classic PDR job. Small, round dents from adjacent car doors.
  • Hail dents — PDR is the industry-standard fix for hail damage.
  • Shopping cart and runaway-cart dents — usually shallow and accessible.
  • Minor dents from sports balls, branches, and bikes.
  • Body-line creases — more complex, but well within PDR capability for a trained technician.
  • Large, shallow dents — counterintuitively, big gentle dents are often easy PDR jobs.

The Three Factors That Determine Success

1. Is the Paint Intact?

This is the single biggest factor. PDR reshapes metal — it does not repair paint. If the paint is cracked, chipped, or scratched through to bare metal, PDR alone won’t give you a flawless result. The dent can still be removed, but you’d need separate paint touch-up.

2. Can the Technician Reach Behind the Panel?

PDR works by massaging the dent out from behind. If the dent sits behind a reinforcement brace, a welded seam, or a sealed area, access is limited. Skilled technicians have tools and techniques for tight spots, but some locations are genuinely unreachable.

3. Is the Metal Stretched?

A sharp, violent impact can stretch metal beyond its elastic limit. Stretched metal won’t return to its original shape no matter how skillfully it’s worked — it needs filler or panel replacement.

What PDR Can’t Fix

  • Cracked or chipped paint — needs conventional paint repair.
  • Stretched or torn metal — needs filler or replacement.
  • Dents with prior body filler — PDR tools can crack old Bondo.
  • Plastic bumper dents — different repair method (though heat reshaping sometimes works).
  • Damage on panel edges — the very edge of a panel is hard to access and structurally stiff.

For damage outside PDR’s range, a traditional body shop is the right call — and we’ll tell you so honestly rather than attempt a repair we can’t perfect.
