Before you spend an afternoon getting body shop quotes, here’s the 60-second self-diagnostic to figure out whether your dent can be fixed with paintless dent repair (PDR) — and how much it’ll cost in Sacramento.
Five questions. Honest answers. We’ve seen tens of thousands of dents in our Sacramento shop, and 85–90% fit into a clear “yes, PDR can fix this” category. The other 10–15% need body shop work and we’ll tell you straight.
The 5-question self-diagnostic
Question 1: Is the paint intact at the dent?
Run your fingernail very gently across the dent edge. Look closely with bright sunlight or a flashlight at an angle.
- Paint is smooth, unbroken, no chips, no cracks: ✓ PDR-fixable. Continue to Q2.
- Visible paint chip, crack, or bare metal showing: × PDR cannot fully fix it. Body shop required (or PDR + paint touch-up combo).
- Tiny hairline crack in clear coat only: Borderline — we can usually do PDR and a small touch-up. Send us a photo.
Why this matters: PDR doesn’t touch paint. If paint is already damaged, the dent fix won’t restore the paint — you’ll need additional work.
Question 2: Is the metal smooth or is there a tear?
Run your hand across the entire dent area. Look for cracks, splits, or holes in the metal itself.
- Smooth deformation, no tears: ✓ PDR-fixable. Continue to Q3.
- Metal is torn, split, or punctured: × PDR cannot fix. Body shop replacement required.
- Sharp fold or pleat in the metal: Maybe — depends on depth. Send a photo for assessment.
Why this matters: PDR reshapes intact metal. Once metal is torn, it has to be cut out and replaced or welded.
Question 3: How big is the dent?
Compare it to common references:
- Dime to quarter: ✓ perfect PDR candidate. 30–60 minutes. $75–$125.
- Quarter to baseball: ✓ standard PDR work. 1–2 hours. $125–$275.
- Baseball to softball: ✓ PDR-fixable but more time. 2–3 hours. $275–$450.
- Larger than softball: Possible PDR, depends on depth. Often $400–$700.
- Crease across the panel (long line): ✓ PDR but the highest skill work. $250–$550. See crease dent details.
Question 4: Where on the car is the dent?
Location affects whether the back of the panel is accessible. PDR techs need to reach the inside of the panel to push the dent out.
- Door, fender, rear quarter panel: ✓ standard PDR access. No issues.
- Hood, trunk lid: ✓ usually easiest — access under the hood or trunk.
- Roof: ✓ PDR works but takes more time — access through the roof rail.
- On a body line / character line / sharp curve: ✓ PDR works but adds time and cost (50–100% premium).
- Pillar (the A/B/C pillars between windows): Often blocked by structural reinforcement — PDR may not be possible.
- Edge of panel (right at the seam): Sometimes very hard — requires the right tool angle. Send a photo.
Question 5: Is your car aluminum-paneled?
Modern Teslas (Model 3, Y, S, X), Ford F-150 (2015+), Rivian, Lucid, and parts of most German luxury cars have aluminum body panels. Aluminum dents are different.
- Steel-bodied car (most common): Standard PDR pricing.
- Aluminum-bodied car: ✓ PDR works but requires aluminum certification + specialized tools + heat management. Add 25–40% to the price.
If your car is aluminum, always ask a PDR shop whether they’re aluminum-certified before they touch the panel. A steel-trained tech will damage an aluminum panel. We’re aluminum-certified — see our Tesla & aluminum repair page.
Photo gallery — fixable vs not fixable
If you can’t tell from the questions alone, here’s what each type looks like in practice.
✓ PDR-fixable (text us a photo)
- Door ding: small, round, paint intact — the classic parking lot souvenir
- Dish dent: medium, shallow, smooth curve — “I backed into something” dent
- Sharp dent: small but deep, paint intact — rock kicked up by a passing truck
- Crease: long line, no paint damage — shopping cart drag along the side
- Hail damage: many small round dents on horizontal panels — PDR is the insurance-preferred fix
- Body line dent: dent crosses a character line, paint intact — harder but doable
× Not PDR-fixable (body shop required)
- Cracked paint: any dent where you can see paint crack or chip in the impact area
- Bare metal showing: paint has been scratched through to the metal itself
- Torn or punctured metal: the panel has lost integrity
- Deep gouge: a scrape that goes well below the paint into the metal
- Frame or structural damage: a panel that’s part of the car’s safety structure
- Very old or repainted panels: if paint has lost flexibility, it may crack during PDR work
What to do after the diagnostic
If you got “yes, PDR-fixable” on all 5 questions
Text a clear photo of the dent to (916) 585-2554. Include:
- One photo of the whole panel from a few feet back
- One close-up of the dent itself, ideally with good light at an angle that makes the dent visible
- One photo of the car’s make/model (so we can confirm aluminum vs steel)
We’ll send back a real quote — not a “starting at” range — within an hour. Most jobs are scheduled within 1–3 days. You can also use our online quote form.
If you got “no” on the paint question (cracked or chipped)
You’ll need body work, but it’s worth sending us a photo anyway — sometimes the paint damage is small enough that a combined PDR + touch-up approach is far cheaper than a full body shop repaint. We’ll tell you which makes sense.
If you got “no” on metal integrity (torn, punctured)
This is a body shop job. We have honest recommendations for Sacramento body shops if you want a referral — ask when you text.
Frequently asked questions
Can paintless dent repair fix any dent?
No — only dents where paint is intact and metal isn’t torn. That’s about 85–90% of common dents. Full breakdown of dent types.
Will PDR fix a dent that has a small paint chip?
The PDR work can be done, but the chip stays. Usually we’ll do the PDR work and recommend a touch-up specialist for the chip — or we’ll quote a combined repair if you want it handled in one visit.
Can you fix a dent that has a stretch mark in the metal?
Yes — if the paint is still intact. Stretched metal is harder PDR work (the metal has memory that resists shaping back), so it takes longer and costs more. But it’s almost always doable.
What if I’m not sure whether the paint is cracked?
Send us a clear close-up photo with good light. We can usually tell from the photo whether paint is intact. If it’s borderline, we’ll be honest about uncertainty.
Can PDR fix dents on aluminum panels?
Yes — if the tech is aluminum-certified. We are. Many shops aren’t and will damage the panel. Always confirm certification before booking.
How long does PDR take for a typical dent?
30 minutes to 2 hours for most dents. Full timing guide here.
